Content Management Systems
What is a Content Management System (CMS)?
A CMS is a set of tools and methodologies that enables technical and non-technical people to create, edit, manage and finally publish a variety of content. It allows the application of a set of rules, processes and workflows that ensure a coherent, validated website appearance.
A CMS can be as simple as setting up a locked template system in Macromedia Dreamweaver or Macromedia Contribute, or as complex as a custom-built system drawing live content from a database.
Does your site need a CMS?
Small sites that are rarely updated are usually best set up using a static file system maintained by Webboy.net.
A site with frequent (monthly) changes would usually be edited by the site owner using Macromedia Dreamweaver or Macromedia Contribute.
Sites that require more frequent (weekly) updates to some sections (such as a news or media release page) usually require live data from a database and, depending on the complexity of the content, may also require a web-based WYSIWYG HTML editor.
Large sites with a lot of frequently changing content will generally be fully database-driven and may include advanced features such as embargoed (and self-publishing) content. These would probably use a set of web-based WYSIWYG HTML editors.
What type of CMS do we build?
We build and deploy static sites using templates compatible with Macromedia Dreamweaver 4, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX or Macromedia Contribute. We can also train people in the use of these programs for site maintenance, or recommend advanced training through accredited agencies.
We can build simple or complex content management systems for deployment on Macromedia ColdFusion 4.5, 5.0 or MX-enabled web servers, or we can set up the CMS on our servers to post the resulting static files to your web server through our custom built cmslite.net interfaces. We can also organise ASP systems if absolutely required (though we'd rather not as ASP is not a Rapid Development solution).
We do not work with Microsoft FrontPage.
